Cycling in Wakayama, Japan! 日本旅行中に和歌山県をサイクリング – at the beginning

Cycling in Japan is lovely, the road is great, people are nice and food is excellent! We cycled in Wakayama prefecture this time. Wakayama is situated in middle of Honsyu, the main Island of Japan. It is South of Osaka, Nara and Mie. The prefecture has a long coast and mountainous areas where Japanese oranges are growing well.

As we were based in Tokoname, Aichi prefecture where Chubu International Airport Centrair is located, we started our trip from Tokoname.

Wakayama is a place where it looks close from Aichi but it seems to be a very far away to get to. I went there once for one of my uncle’s wedding when I was small but I have no idea where it was in Wakayama.

To travel on Train (or on a high speed boat) with a bicycle in Japan, it is required to put bicycles in ‘Rinko bag’. As you see on this picture, bicycles are in Rinko bag. It is a specific bag in Japan you can buy them in bicycle shops and online. You will need to take off both front and back wheels to fit in a Rinko bag. We used Ostrich brand, which was fine. It is not quite like a bag we are used to use in the UK, so it took a bit of lesson to fit in a small bag though.

From Tokoname, we put our bicycles in Rinkou Bag in order for us to get to the Chubu International Airport by train. From the airport, we then took a high speed boat, Tsu Airport Line, to get to Tsu-city in 45 minutes. We took an early 9AM boat to connect to a train at Tsu. There weren’t many people onboard then, only about 5 people including two of us! I guess with Covid-19, there weren’t that many overseas tourists in Japan just yet although quite a few domestic tourists in Japan with the Government’s travel campaign.
