Sete Cidades walk－セテ・シダデスのウォーキング June 2021

サンミゲル島での観光地で有る、セテ・シダデスは、島の西側に位置する大きな火山のクレーターに有る村です。ここではクレーターの廻りを歩くのが観光客に人気です。

Sete Cidades is located on the western side of Sao Miguel Island. Walking around this large volcanic crater is one of the popular activities among tourists.

サンミゲル島では、レンタカーをするのも一般的だそうですが、私達が海外旅行をする時はまずバスと自転車で観光地に行くことを考えます。

When we travel, we often use buses and bicycles as a mean of transport even when other tourists rent a car.

セテ・シダデスまで行くのもバスが何時にポンタデルガーダを出発するのかを確認して、朝8時にはオールドタウンのエアビーで予約した宿泊先を出発です。

We looked up a bus time table online to get to Seta Cidades from Ponta Delgada, and left where we were staying in the old town at 8 AM.

バス停までは徒歩で10分もかかりませんが、バス停が何個か有るので、何処で待っているのかを確認。通りかかったバスの運転手に聞くと、なんとまだ40分後の出発とのことです。コロナの影響で普段の時刻表よりも本数が少ないからということでしょう。

It only took 10 minutes or so to get to the bus station, where there were quite a few bus stop booths. We checked which booth the bus leaves for Seta Cidades and asked a bus driver when it the next bus leaving. Only to be told that we still have 40 minutes to wait! Sounded like the bus service had reduced bus time table due to Covid-19 outbreak.

バス停で出会った、行先が同じイギリス人男性ナイジェルさんと主人と3人で町の真ん中にあるCentral Cafeで一服します。

So we decided to have a cup of tea/coffee at the Central Cafe with a British chap, Nigel, who we met while looking for a right bus stop for our destination.

そして、40分後に待ちに待ったバスに乗り、セテ・ジダデスまで向かいます。バスを降りると数人かの観光客が同じ目的で来ているようで、歩き始めると同じ方向に行く人達がいたので、一緒に歩くこととなりました。中でも、イギリス人で、ブリティッシュエアウェイズをコロナ禍で退職したと言う、ナイジェルさんとはずっとクレーターの廻りを歩きました。

We got onto the long awaited bus 40 minutes later.　When we got off the bus, there ware a few tourists who had the same idea of walking around the crater. Nigel, who left British Airways recently due to the Covid-19 pandemic, kept a company with us.

好天に恵まれて、絶景です。 Absolutely stunning view from the ridge or crater.

ウォーキングですが、この湖の廻りを一周するのが定番です。私たちは、一周終わりがけに、湖から海辺の街Mosteirosまで少し長めのウォーキングをすることにしました。終わってみたら24キロ近くも歩くこととなって、疲れましたが、歩き終わってからビーチで一休み。

The classic walk is to go around this crater. We detoured by aiming to get to Mosteiros beach so made the walk touch longer. It was a 24km walk all together – which made us tired but resting at the Mosteiros beach was an excellent way to finish it.
